How can CBD help with dog seizures?

The demand for pet CBD products has increased at a brutal level in recent years. Why? We hope by the end of the article you will understand and get an answer to your question. Until then, let’s see what you should know about dog seizures.

There are few scarier things for a dog parent than seeing their beloved pet lie on their side and twitch. Did you know that 1 out of 20 dogs have such convulsive seizures during their lifetime? If your furry friend has them over and over, they might be epileptic.

What is a seizure?

A seizure is a neurological state, commonly referred to as cramps or convulsion. It is a distortion in the brain, a shift from normal activity that impacts the muscles so the affected one cannot control their movements. Seizures can happen to humans, dogs or any animal. When a diabetic dog’s blood sugar level drops or when they are given a treat that contains xylitol, they might end up having a seizure, too. These cases are known as epileptiform seizures which is not equal to epilepsy! The affected doggos are usually curable or at least treatable, unless it’s a really severe case.

A similar condition can be the so called psychogenic pseudo seizure, caused by the dog’s excessive anxiety reaction to things such as fireworks, new people, or even separation anxiety can lead to any type of epileptic seizure.

Epilepsy is a regular return of convulsive seizures for dogs. This means that the symptoms might show up again and again, especially if your furry friend is suffering from an illness such as kidney issues, liver conditions or a head injury.

No matter what the reasons are, to witness a seizure like that is a nightmare for every dog owner, causing concern and worry. However, there is a treatment to alleviate these symptoms.

Unfortunately, drugs prescribed to seizures are only helpful in 70-80 % of cases and that, too with side effects such as liver damage, lethargy, weight gain, changes of personality, a decrease in white cells and thrombocytes (blood coagulation), or even thyroid and other hormonal lesions.

Types of dog seizures

GRAND MAL SEIZURES

Grand Mal seizures are what most people have on mind as an epileptic seizure. Signs can be falling over, contractions, twitching, loss of control over muscles and unintentional urination and defecation. Grand Mal seizures can last from a few seconds to several minutes.

FOCAL SEIZURES

In these cases only a small part of the dog’s brain is affected by an electronic disorder that causes an epileptic reaction. The animal usually remains conscious. Among the symptoms are unwanted convulsions of members or repeated facial movements.

PSYCHOMOTOR SEIZURES

These seizures are the most difficult to recognize so you might think your dog is just messing or playing with you. Actually, he might be struggling with cerebral inactivity. Another symptom is that your dog gets hyperactive or aggressive for a short time, or behaves in an unusual way such as staring still or hallucinating.

Recognizing symptoms of dog seizures!

Since dogs don’t have a way to tell us what is happening to them, an owner of an epileptic dog has to be aware and watch out for the following symptoms:

  • Stiffness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • The dog bites its own tongue
  • Foaming at the mouth
  • Unintentional urination or defecation

What to do in case of a seizure?

If you notice any of these behaviours with your dog and suspect an epileptic seizure, stay calm and follow these steps:

  • Talk to them at a soft, calming voice
  • Apply light pressure to the eyes which can reduce the duration of the seizure
  • Shield your dog from injuries and stop them from bumping their head
  • Be careful not to get close to their mouth since they might bite you
  • Do not punish them for peeing or other…
  • If the seizure lasts longer than a couple of minutes, go ask for help.

What causes dog seizures?

It is hard to tell what specific reasons stand behind a dog seizure. Nonetheless, you need to pay attention if your furry friend has recently produced one of these signs or symptoms and consider the following possible reasons:

  •  Kidney or liver issues: if your dog is currently struggling with kidney or liver problems, or has had them recently, seizures might occur soon.
  • High or low blood sugar level: an excessively high or excessively low blood sugar can largely affect the brain, leading to convulsions.
  • Head trauma: recent or past injuries of the head might be a threat to your dog and can lead to seizures.

Possible reasons behind seizures

  • Genetics (something hereditary)
  • Anaemia
  • Vascular conditions
  • Poisoning
  • Tumours
  • Infections

Can CBD help with dog seizures?

Since most dog epilepsy medicines have serious side effects, many dog parents are looking for a safe and natural alternative treatment to alleviate their pet’s symptoms; a treatment that doesn’t come with these side effects.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive compound extracted from cannabis. It has been shown that CBD has several advantages to your health, including stress alleviation, anti-inflammatory properties, help to relax and many other beneficial factors, all without any side effects.

CBD is used by more and more pet owners to treat aging favourites, to improve their physical, mental or behaviour conditions or to achieve a better general health. This is why you hear so many animal CBD stories in which pet owners tell about how largely CBD has improved their favourite one’s life quality.

What kind of CBD should you give to your dog?

The most common and tastiest method is in the form of CBD dog treats. Hempworx CBD dog treats are made from organically grown USA hemp and contain 2,5 mgs of CBD per treat. They have a delicious bacon flavor that all dogs love.  Cats love them too! For larger dogs (60+ lbs), it may be more practical and more cost-effective to use our CBD tinctures.

We have three types of HempWorx pet CBD tinctures:

HempWorx pet CBD oils are made from organically grown US hemp and contains 250 mg CBD and 5 mg CBG. All dogs love its nice chicken taste, and even cats wouldn’t turn their back on it. CBD oil for pets is a safe, easy and fun way to make pets enjoy all the good effects of CBD. It is best to ingest the tincture immediately into the pet’s mouth (they love to lick it off the pipette), but it’s also okay to drip it into their food. If your pet is on prescribed medication, we suggest that you consult your vet before starting a CBD therapy.
